Game 45 - Something smells Fishy
Hello Guild Ballers,
Yes! It is the time of the week where I tell you about what happened in my guild ball life. I faced Fish for you this past week.
After a busy day at home I rushed over towards Gent where my local suplier of Guild Ball crack is located. I can tell you without shame that it was top notch stuff... I really got my dose of fun.
I was keen on trying out S3 A&G or Harry. But since I was facing a fishy team I opted to go with A&G, in my minds eye I figured the extra tackle result with Greede attached would come in handy. Boy was I wrong! Or rather, I didn't position A&G very well to (ab)use this tactic. Nor did I read the playbook of either player very well... Tackling with Greede alone is a hard thing to do as it turns out.
Upon my arrival I found my local pundit still knee deep in a meeting with the board of our local gaming club. I set up the table and orderd my drink. No, not a Duvel this time, I had an early shift the day after and weather conditions didn't want me clouded either for fear of brainfreeze.
My Line-up:
Tapper - Scum - Hooper - Mash - Spigot - Avarisse & Greede
Fishermen Line-up:
Corsair - Tentacles - Sakana - Siren - Greyscales - Kraken
As you can see (or if not I'm telling you now) all the fish have 2" Melee range. I wasn't too happy with that. On the other hand, I was only facing 2 stronger fish (Kraken and Corsair). So I figured I'd go for board control in the middle ASAP.
We roll for initiative and I opt to receive.
Corsair trundles to the middle and kicks the ball against the barrier just over the middle line. I opt to go in with:
*Spigot. Sprinting towards the ball and snapping it gives me 2,5" to creep back behind the barrier, blocking LOS for character plays. I opt to keep the ball on Spigot.
* Siren comes towards Spigot and makes him an offer he can't refuse. He's lured over to her and she has no influence left to steal the ball off him.
*Hooper thinks he can only try to prevent the ball from going over to the fishies so he sprints up towards Spigot and gives him the Tough Skin.
*Sakana has the brilliant idea to kick the ball towards Corsair after stealing it from Spigot. The Kick fails, but still scatters good enough for a snap to Corsair. - Robin doesn't like the 2 fishies being in close proximity of 2 of my brewers, but at least he's got the ball...
* Hoping The fish will bring one of the players into range the cat walks up as bait and hugs the barrier.
* The fishermen know all about using bait so they don't bite. Kraken walks up, dragging the octopus with him.
* Mash sprints up field.
* Greyscales puts himself inbetween Sakana and Kraken, but out of range of Tapper and Avarisse.
* Avarisse sprints up. I have 2 INF left so I could poop out Greede for a charge, but I'm looking to get the ball back next turn and want that extra tackle result on the playbook, with Greede on the board that's a no go, so I throw the INF in the bin and keep Greede where he is, attached to Avarisse. (I should've gotten him out and base to base with Avarisse for the extra INF)
* Corsair welcomes Avarisse in the middle and puts him on his arse.
* Tapper sprints out towards the barrier staying within range of Corsair for next turn and in range to go for Siren or Sakana should something bad happen...
* Tentacles jogs further up the field and puts him in between Kraken and Corsair.
*Mash knows that Corsair in the middle is not good for business, or at least not the Brewer Business. He charges into Corsair who Braces for Impact (Gains Stoic) I go for the Howzat?! anyway triggering both the Stoic and Sturdy traits. (I only got 3 net hits) Mash swings again and lands 3 hits again, for a 2nd Howzat!? Greyscales stops Corsair from flying back too much, but the ball is scattered off Corsair and lands behind Kraken and Tentacles.
* Siren wants to stay alive so flees the scene towards her goal.
* Avarisse stands up, charges towards Corsair, does 3MD>> and a M Singled out. And swings again for 3 non momentous damage. (both times reduced to 2)
* Tentacles moves a bit, waiting to see what brewers will do next.
* Tapper sprints around the cat and lands 2 more hits on Corsair for some more Damage + Commanding Aura and puts Old Jake's on the pussycat.
* Corsair doesn't like the KD anymore, stands up, KD's Avarisse, walks into melee with the brewers in the middle and KD's Mash, then KD's Tapper.
* Scum Shadowlikes behind Tapper, jogs next to Mash and into melee with Corsair and swings for 2 attacks doing some moderate damage. I decide to give away my momentum and stand up Tapper and Mash.
* Sakana sprints into the scrum in the middle puts Weak point on Mash but fails to do much else (we had some major bad rolls on both sides up till now)
* Spigot Folows Sakana into the fray. He puts the hurt into Corsair though, rolling his TAC + 4 for the Charge + 2 from Singeld out + 3 from Tapper / A&G / Mash - 3 from Sakana/greyscales/Tentacles + 1 from CA - and comes up with only 3 net hits (the dice Gods work in misterious ways) to KD Corsair again. Since the Advance ended within melee with Greyscales, he UM's away so Spigot can't get to him but he can still touch Spigot.
* Greyscales hits Spigot, but does nothing spectacular.
* Hooper runs towards Kraken, but fails to reach him due to being short on breath (aka, brewers are slow)
* Kraken picks up the ball and sprints forwards but out of reach of Hooper for a goalkick. 4-0 to the Fishermen.
The Goalkick is resolved and the ball ends up against the Barrier.
We roll for initiative and I go first. After rolling a 6
* Tapper gets a full set of 6 INF (thank you Scum) and starts the beatdown on Corsair. Corsair does not survive 4-2 to the fishermen. With some leftover INF we turn our attention towards Sakana. And put 1 on Scum and 1 on Spigot with Old Jake's.
* Sakana knows better than to stay within te brewers line-up. He hits Spigot for a dodge out of melee with Tapper. Moves to the outer reaches of Spigots range and hits again for only 1" dodge and stays within engagement, then swings again and gets the 2" dodge off. Sakana heals himself up.
* Mash goes next walks up to Kraken and only after Howzat!? realises he should've charged in for a Wrap and only one swing with more dice. He puts up Super Shot with the other influence instead shrugging, oh well...
* Siren comes up and engages Spigot with a charge wrapping on her playbook- Tapper is seduced into hitting Spigot (KD'ing him), after the wrap did one damage. With one influence left Siren swings again and takes the momentous dodge without really shifting position.
* Scum walks into Sakana within CA. I'm hoping for the wrap-monster to get some hatefull fish-eyed looks. I come up short and Scum starts licking Sakana's boots instead. The basterd must've stepped into some rotten fish somewhere to distract the little kitten... Never trust a cat to do your dirty work for you...
*Kraken Rises to his feet and uses his harpoon to drag Hooper towards him, welcoming him with a fist. Hooper takes it in the face and is knocked down.
* Hooper grits his teeth (yes I activate true grit to stand back up) and Swings his wooden stick towards Kraken's Head. He didn't see it coming and drops to his knees. (KD) The Hooper walks out towards the goal hoping he can block incoming strikers and passes the turn.
* Greyscales activates and fetches the ball, but has no influence enough to kick it, so he hides behind the barrier on the other side of Avarisse and Greede.
* Avarisse walks into Greyscales with 3 INF on him. Greyscales UM's away. Greede gets pooped out and swings on Greyscales who counterattacks. Minor damage goes onto the old man. His CA allows him to dodge out. Greede uses another inf to where'd they go into Greyscales and buys another attack. For no hits at all... (why is Greede's Tackle that far up his playbook? *sigh*)
* Tentacles goes in and engages Spigot.
* Spigot goes next, clears conditions using momentum, walks into Greyscales who UM'd away already so will have to take what Spigot brings... Spigot did take 2 parting blows (Tentacles and Siren) to get there. We manage to get 3 net hits in to KD Greyscales. The ball scatters against the barrier and both Greede and Spigot could snap if they wanted. They didn't so the ball is left against the barrier.
Rolling for initiative I won it again.
Corsair comes back on from Greyscales side
* Tapper Deletes Siren and takes a couple of Swings on Sakana with CA up. Then gives Scum 2 Inf with old jakes. 4-4
* Greyscales stands up forfaiting movement and snaps the ball - then runs off with it through where'd they go and passes to Corsair.
* Spigot takes tooled up to put it on the Cat and takes a swing on Sakana. Only 2 hits, no KD.
* Sakana wants to get the hell out of dodge but walks a little before attacking, thus forfaiting any further movement. He only dodges away through some playbook results on Spigot and lands onto the fast ground but out of direct brewer melee range.
* Scum uses Sick'em to charge into Sakana But only lands 2 net-hits (well it does translate into 4 DMG) - What the hell has that guy done to throw the old cat off her game like that? A counter-attack lets him dodge out of melee and into cover. So the Old jakes influence is actually worth nothing on Scum anymore...
* Kraken stands up, walks over to Hooper and hits him in the face. (but only after thinking about going into Mash where I went "Base to base then? or can I UM away?" remeasuring showed there was no base to base option)
* Mash charges forwards into tentacles.
* Tentacles is bored and doesn't do much other than walk into Mash
* Avarisse walks up to Kraken and puts singled out on him. Greede sprints to Avarisse an where'd they go's into base to base.
* Corsair walks up the pitch and passes to Sakana - who decides not to dodge 4" forward.
* Hooper uses momentum to get true grit up and swings to kick Kraken in the nether region. Kraken again hits the floor KD'd.
* (well yes, Siren is dead so there isn't a 12th activation)
This time no initiative for me.
Looking for momentum and to save Corsair from another Tapper beat-down Robin brings Siren back on the pitch with the mission to lure Tapper in.
* Spigot, loaded up with 4 INF charges into Sakana - we hit the needed Balls Gone and pass towards Mash dropping the card 'Composure' giving me +2 Dice to make the kick. The pass lands and Mash dodges forwards with the ball. The Free counterattack comes in and Sakana dodges away. 2 INF left on Spigot, but what to do with it, only the cat is close enough to give Tooled up away and the last inf is wasted...
* Greyscales wants the ball back - But forgets about the UM on Mash. And Sadly wastes his charge.
* I'm working out some scenario's but decide not to wait to kick the goal in using my MP from not going first. I score the goal and it's 4-8 to brewers.
* The Goal kick goes out towards Corsair, who puts stand firm on Sakana and jogs to pick up the ball, walks back and passes to Sakana (who dodges forwards) 2 more influence go towards trying to drag the cat in, but he fails.
* A&G climb back together into one model, we land some hits on Kraken, singling him out. After that Avarisse walks over to the goal and greede pops out to block the goal even more for Sakana.
* Kraken wants to free up the space for Sakana so puts his spear in Avarisse and drags him towards him.
* Hooper lands another hit on Kraken, KD'ing him and walks into the gap created by Kraken.
* Sakana goes towards the goal anyway, hitting Spigot first for some momentous dodges and then dodges out to bonustime the shot over hoopers base only. The shot lands brining the score up to 8-8.
* The goalkick is made towards Spigot and the cat and it scatters in front of the cat who shadowlikes to pick the ball up and jogs casually towards Tapper - with no fish around but Tentacles who has no influence - we drop the ball of and let it snap to Tapper.
* Tentacles throws it's tentacles up in frustration and begs the Gods to get him off this field that's starting to reek like an alcohol infested breath.
* Tapper activates and I get this gut feeling my whole world will go tits up. I decide to burn all the influence I don't need on Greyscales for momentum whilst my opponent screams at me for doing shit that will turn out to be a total waste of time. As it turns out, Tapper fails the 4D kick on goal needing 3's... TADAAA.
As if failing to score isn't enough I don't have initiative... lucky enough for me Siren has nobody to kick the ball to, so I might be able to pull it off and win anyway.
* Tapper puts aside 2 INF - one to sprint and one to kick towards the goal. Uses the rest to delete Siren and then goes for the goal to end the game 8-14 to brewers!!
Anyway, this line-up was more to test out A&G... I didn't get to play A&G as I thought they would play; He was to far away from the ball every time to Tackle (with Greede attached), or was unable to get through the middle to poop out A&G for a counter-goal (I had the Card Super Fan). I was surprised to learn Greede has a Tackle but only very late on the playbook (Where I went back into Greyscales after UM from Avarisse... , guess that'll teach me to field a guy without propperly reading his card and/or think about him and how to field him within the team propperly. I also figured out it's probably worth pooping out Greede and end the turn in base to base against Avarisse for the extra Inf. That way if I do get the chance to score the goal Greede has his own influence to make the goalkick with and can use Avarisses INF to sprint and Where'd they go to get to the goal!
I had a really good time playing this game and am looking forward to try again with either the same line-up or with Harry the Hat in there. We'll see...
That's all folks!
See you next time!

Looking for momentum and to save Corsair from another Tapper beat-down Robin brings Siren back on the pitch with the mission to lure Tapper in.
TURN 5:
* Siren goes first and indeed lures Tapper away from the Corsair group. Then, looking to flee the scene herself she moves away ASAP.* Spigot, loaded up with 4 INF charges into Sakana - we hit the needed Balls Gone and pass towards Mash dropping the card 'Composure' giving me +2 Dice to make the kick. The pass lands and Mash dodges forwards with the ball. As if failing to score isn't enough I don't have initiative... lucky enough for me Siren has nobody to kick the ball to, so I might be able to pull it off and win anyway.
TURN 6:
* Siren goes for the ball and kicks it out in the open. It doesn't scatter very far and the kick was a good one, so the scatter is rerolled. Only an inch further, but not far enough to prevent Tapper to try again or even go for the snapshot through Mash. The crowd convinces the fish coach to lure Tapper in.* Tapper puts aside 2 INF - one to sprint and one to kick towards the goal. Uses the rest to delete Siren and then goes for the goal to end the game 8-14 to brewers!!
Thoughts about my line-up:
After playing Esters and Stoker in previous games I must say I missed AOE. At one point (Turn 2 with Hooper) I wanted Stoker on the field so bad to put burning on Kraken. That would've prevented a goal... Slowing the Fishermen down sounds good.Anyway, this line-up was more to test out A&G...
Thoughts about the game overall:
This time killing Corsair in the middle worked out ok. But I still had a hard time keeping the ball away from the fishermen. I'm not so sure it's a viable tactic, but then again, I'm not sure what is! So any thoughts on how to play corsair fish are very much welcomed! (Be it here or on anywhere you found the link to my blog!)I had a really good time playing this game and am looking forward to try again with either the same line-up or with Harry the Hat in there. We'll see...
That's all folks!
See you next time!
